There’s something undeniably magical about a new year. It’s a fresh start, a chance to refocus and an invitation to reflect on the past 12 months. In 2024, I made it a priority to carve out quiet moments, and as 2025 begins, I’m leaning into that focus – dreaming ahead to a year full of possibility.
Now, I’m not really a “New Year’s Resolution” kind of person, but I am big on commitments – especially the ones I make to myself. So, in a little act of vulnerability, I’m sharing a few of my top commitments for 2025:
1. Stick to my non-negotiables
Last year, I sat down and created my very own list of ten “non-negotiables” – and friends, if you haven’t done this yet, I double dog dare you to try it. It’s a mix of personal and professional boundaries that have become my North Star. Why ten? Because my dad looked like David Letterman in the '90s, and Letterman’s a Hoosier – it just felt right!
My non-negotiables range from making sure I never miss bedtime with my daughter, even when traveling or onsite at a program, to cutting back on booze because it makes me tired and lazy (and no one has time for that!). This exercise was a total game changer for me. It helped me show up for myself so I could give more to the people and things I care about.
Let’s grab a virtual coffee if you want the full scoop – I’m happy to share! 😉
2. Prioritize one-on-one connections
Like many of you, I’ve been drinking from a fire hose these past couple of years, but I’m thrilled to say I’m finally at a happy place with my calendar and workload, which means I can refocus on what I love most: connecting with people one-on-one.
Fun fact: I’m not actually an extrovert! I might seem like one, but I’m really an ambivert (a mix of introvert and extrovert). I still get butterflies before walking into a networking reception, but nothing recharges my batteries like meaningful, one-on-one connections.
This year, I’m committed to making more space for these moments – whether it’s spending quality time with the Accent Indy team, catching up with our partners or grabbing coffee with industry friends. It’s the kind of connection that fills my cup (and my heart).
3. Practice compassionate curiosity
The world continues to amaze me – sometimes in ways that leave me shaking my head with a big, “What the actual…?!” But here’s the thing: everyone has their own perspective, and while mine may feel right to me, it’s not the only “right” one out there.
So, I am taking a big breath in these moments and challenging myself to lean in with compassion and curiosity. I want to better understand other views, grow in my knowledge and build more respect for the beautifully diverse ways people think and live.
While these commitments may not solve the world’s problems or magically give us longer lead times for programs, they’re simple, everyday ways I plan to show up better for myself and others.
And hey – if there’s something I can do to show up for you this year, you know where to find me.
Here’s to 2025, my friends. Let’s thrive!
Sarah
